The peasants played a significant role in the Champaran Civil Disobedience. Gandhiji went to Champaran to make the peasants aware of their rights. So, they could become free from the long oppression and fear of the British landlords. Therefore, when Gandhiji was summoned to court, the illiterate fear-stricken peasants started gathering at the courtyard in the hope of having the 'Mahatma' who had come for them and now was in trouble with authorities. Had they become unable to rise above their deeprooted fear and not showed the spontaneous demonstration around the courthouse, the civil disobedience would certainly be a failure. Thus, it can be said that the peasants were themselves the most crucial agents in the success of Champaran Civil Disobedience.
