The name Orunodoi means "Sunrise" in Assamese, and it was chosen to reflect the magazine's goal of bringing new ideas and information to the Assamese people. The magazine was edited by Nathan Brown, an American Baptist missionary who was also the first principal of the Government Sanskrit College in Sibsagar. Brown was a prolific writer and translator, and he played a major role in the development of Assamese literature.

Orunodoi was a success, and it helped to popularize the Assamese language and promote cultural and intellectual exchange between Assam and the West. The magazine was published for 33 years, and it came to be seen as an important symbol of Assamese identity.
